External Leadership Development

This course presents research-based strategies to increase stakeholder engagement within the school community and with external partners. Students will identify and integrate external resources into the school community to support learning goals, develop plans to improve communication among stakeholders, and create policy and guidelines for using electronic communication tools. Students will evaluate existing guidebooks and written communications and make revisions to better meet the needs of all community members.

Standards Met in this Course

Standard I:

Principals demonstrate organizational leadership by strategically developing a vision and mission, leading change, enhancing the capacity of personnel, distributing resources, and aligning systems of communication for continuous school improvement.

Standard II:

Principals demonstrate inclusive leadership practices that foster a positive school culture and promote safety and equity for all Principal Candidates, staff, and community.

Standard IV:
Principals demonstrate professionalism through ethical conduct, reflection and external leadership.

Artifacts

Throughout CSU Global’s courses principal candidates research, analyze, demonstrate and apply skills aligned with the Colorado Principal Quality Standards .Candidates reflected on curricular and instructional initiatives at their school and collaborated with their mentors to develop a performance challenge goal. 

Artifact 1: Parent Teacher Communication Guide for New Teachers

Represents: Establishment of communication standards for staff and strategies for building engagement with families.

Evidence of: Capacity to design and distribute a plan of action for staff to use in alignment with the school’s vision.



Artifact 2: Relationship Building Toolkit

Represents: Knowledge and understanding of the value of building positive relationships between the school and family.

Evidence of: Knowledge of evidence-based strategies that schools can use to foster a sense of belonging and community through culturally responsive practices.

Represents: A Comprehensive list of resources/structures designed to support family and community engagement

Evidence of: Ability to compile and synthesize resources for use by stakeholders in implementing school expectations and processes.


Artifact 3: School Orientation Guide

Represents: Synthesis of key elements of school processes and structures into an accessible communication tool that can be easily shared with stakeholders. 

Evidence of: Knowledge that a leader needs to take an active role in sustaining and promoting a strong climate, culture and the school environment that is welcoming, orderly and safe for all.


Artifact 4: Postsecondary Event Planning Guide

Represents: Collaboration with school and community stakeholders to promote opportunities for and awareness of post-secondary opportunities.

Evidence of: Leadership and planning capabilities within the community to support students and families.


Artifact 5: Case Study

Represents: In depth analysis of how to support students and families through collaboration and coordination with outside agencies.

Evidence of: Understanding the school leaders’ role in coordinating wraparound services and connecting families to the community to support academic success and opportunity.
